Describe how you developed research and planning skills for media production and evaluation. How theses skills contributed to creative decision making. Refer to range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time.
During our planning and research stage, we have explored a range of skills in which we could potentially utilize for our media production. Green screening and I-stop motion are basic as well as efficient due to easy access and development of technology. Advanced programs, such as final cut express, used in production is capable in allowing us to create miscellaneous effects, through creative editing skills. For example, in our music video, we have applied I-stop motion for the glow sticks and test tubes scene. This was accomplished by cutting and rearranging the footage. In order to maintain the beat of the music, we have also modified the speed of the sequence. An alternative program for I-stop motion, was I-stop, which was experimented with during our planning and research stage. I have created a short animation with play dough figurines called ‘Kawaii’ animation, which was then distributed on you tube and posted on to blogger. In my opinion, I think that it was more convenient with final cut express rather than I-stop because with final cut you could just film with a camera and edit the footage later on the stage, which makes it more portable than I-stop since it requires the Mac when filming in frames. This demonstrates development because in our production I have used final cut express considering the fact that I find it more easier to create the I-stop effect on final cut express. Although the cutting the footage creates a slightly jagged/jerky movement, it creates similar effect to the axel cut, which we original wanted to do for our music video.
Other than skills, it is essential that we are also inspired, in order to contribute creative decision making. Internet (web 2.0), was our main source of planning and research, you tube allowed us to stream music videos. From this we could grasp the conventions and analyze theories of various genres. At the same time become influenced, which triggers intertextuality and post modernism. For example in our music video there is a sequence of silhouette dance, with colored tint and typography ‘RADAR’. This concept was motivated by a music video called ‘Ikimono- gakari: Hikari no Hotaru’ and the I-Pod advert. The typography of the ‘RADAR’, presents the development of the concept by amplifying the lyrics (Richard Dyer) and continuity of the colour trends, which perpetuate the house style. Supplementary, you tube permit us to copy the embedded code of the video, which we could post it on to blogger, making it beneficial for us because it makes our work more visual and preserving our working progress in a organized format. You tube was also involved with the Evaluation stage, for example we have annotated the final media product, instead of writing a long paragraph of evaluation, this is a more creative method. Digital distribution , was made more easier with web 2.0, such as face book, my space, twitter and you tube. This is advantageous for us as we could contact a un sign artist for the permission of their music track and receive audience feed back from a larger sample, which supports us to develop our music video. For example, in one of the audiences feed back it has stated that they liked the over layered clip of the lips and the glow sticks and they are hoping for more effects. From the feed back, I have altered some areas by adding more effects and transitions, for instance I have created the four screen, by key framing and adding zoom transition.
Even though you tube, was the main web 2.0 used for planning and evaluation, it has also supported me during the production stage of the media product because you tube offers many tutorial for final cut express, which I could learn and adjust to. For example in the music video I have managed to create ‘Radar’ words coming out of the close up the lips. This was accomplished by combining different techniques that I have learnt from tutorials as well from experience. In order, to bring about this effect, you would have to make sure that you copy the still images in to the media files so it won’t be offline and to get rid of the black background, you would have to apply luma key. To make the words seem like they are coming out of the mouth apply zoom. This helped to develop the close up the lip by making it more alive and upbeat to match the music pace. As one of the audience feed backs has mentioned that the close up scene was prolonged, which restrain the end of the music video to build up it’s climax.
